Summer Six – A Salty Surprise

A desi version of a FGC classic.

In the summer of 2024, I completed six projects for close friends in the Fighting Game Community. The entire process, from start to finish, took about three months, which is why I’m calling these six projects the Summer Six series. This is one of them, created for a friend who goes by the moniker Sodium and plays Blanka from Street Fighter.

This Ain’t Morton’s

In the Fighting Game Community, getting salty refers to acting out or complaining, especially after losing a match. I suspect this is why my friend chose his gamertag—his playstyle and/or his characters make people salty.

Because I was already creating another artwork featuring Blanka, I decided to do something original for Sodium. Instead of centering the artwork around Blanka, I satirized one of the most popular salt brands in India.

This theme is common in the American FGC, where Morton’s Salt is popular. The Morton Salt Girl mascot is well-known in fighting game circles, so I gave it a desi spin.

All elements and colors in this artwork closely match the branding of the salt packet/container. Instead of a QR code linking to the manufacturer’s website, I included one that leads to my friend’s socials.

This is by far my favorite design in the Summer Six series because of the brainstorming and effort behind it. I’m especially proud of the ingredients tab on the back panel of the controller.
