In the summer of 2024, I completed six projects for close friends in the Fighting Game Community. The entire process, from start to finish, took about three months, which is why I’m calling these six projects the Summer Six series. This is one of them, created for a friend who loves the character Menat from Street Fighter.
Menat, Ankha, Anakaris, and Capcom
What do these four have in common? For those who don’t know, Menat is a Street Fighter character from Egypt. Anakaris, from Darkstalkers, also hails from Egypt. Ankha is an Egyptian cat from Animal Crossing, a game by Nintendo. And finally, Capcom is the company behind Street Fighter and Darkstalkers—but they’re from Japan, not Egypt.
Beyond their Egyptian connection, these four share a common color scheme—prominent shades of yellow and blue in their designs and logos. That’s why I themed this controller around a yellow-and-blue palette.
Design meets Personality
While I haven’t spent much time with this friend in person, we’ve had plenty of online conversations, both voice and text. He enjoys silly Japanese anime memes, cute art, and serious, “cool” art in equal measure. I felt that Menat in the style of Pop Team Epic and the Menat + Ankha artwork on the front would cater to his silly/cute side, while the detailed Menat profile on the back would appeal to his serious, competitive side.
